Viburnum opulus, commonly known as the Snowball Tree or European Cranberrybush, is a deciduous shrub that is native to Europe, northern Africa, and central Asia. It is grown for its large, showy clusters of white flowers that resemble snowballs, hence the name "Snowball Tree".
The shrub typically grows with a rounded form. The leaves are dark green and deeply lobed, and they turn reddish-purple in the fall. In the late spring or early summer, the plant produces large clusters of white flowers. The flowers are followed by bright red berries in Autumn, which are edible but tart and are often used for making jams and jellies.
Viburnum opulus is a hardy plant that is relatively easy to grow. It prefers well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types and pH levels, but it prefers slightly acidic soil. The plant is relatively drought-tolerant once established and does not require much maintenance. It can be pruned in late winter or early spring to control its size and shape.
