Viola hederacea, commonly known as the Native Violet or Ivy-leaved Violet, is a species of flowering plant in the family Violaceae. It is native to Australia and New Zealand, and is found in a range of habitats, including open forests, woodlands, grasslands, and coastal dunes.
The Native Violet is a low-growing plant that typically reaches a height of around 10cm. It has small, heart-shaped leaves that are dark green and glossy, and produces delicate, purple or white flowers with yellow centres. The flowers appear from winter through to summer, and are followed by small, edible, green fruits.
Viola hederacea is often used as a groundcover plant in gardens and landscapes, due to its attractive foliage and delicate flowers. It is relatively easy to grow and can tolerate a range of soil types, as long as they are well-drained. The plant prefers a shaded or semi-shaded position, and will benefit from regular watering during dry periods. The Native Violet is also an important food source for a range of insects, including butterflies, moths, and native bees.
A ground cover forming mats to around 50 cm wide and likes damp areas and shady situations though will tolerate full sun. The leaves are bright green and kidney shaped to around 3 cm across. Produces white and violet flowers. This is a very hardy perennial that can be used in hanging baskets and containers.
