Sizing guide
Magnolia Vulcan is a deciduous magnolia tree that is well-suited for smaller gardens. It is a hybrid between Magnolia liliiflora and a Lanarth hybrid. The tree typically reaches a height of around 5 meters (16 feet) and has a compact habit, slightly more upright than some other varieties.
The standout feature of Magnolia Vulcan is its large, fragrant flowers. The blossoms are a vibrant and attractive "lipstick" red color. This tree flowers well even at a young age and blooms relatively early in the season.
When it comes to growing conditions, Magnolia Vulcan can be cultivated in a large container or window box if necessary. It thrives in a sunny position, receiving around 6 hours of sunlight each day. Providing some protection from strong winds is beneficial, especially if you want the flowers to maintain their form for as long as possible. It is recommended to stake the tree when it's young. During planting, watering thoroughly and adding liquid seaweed fertilizer is advisable.
To maintain optimal growth, mulch should be applied generously to keep the roots cool and retain moisture during the summer months. Pruning deciduous magnolias, including Black Tulip Magnolia, is generally not necessary. However, you can remove any damaged branches or those that detract from the tree's shape. In most cases, pruning is not required at all.
Regarding fertilizer, applying a general-purpose fertilizer in spring should be sufficient for most areas. It is also a good time to renew the mulch. It's important to water the tree well both before and after applying the fertilizer to your Magnolia Vulcan.
Overall, Magnolia Vulcan is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, showcasing its striking red flowers and compact growth habit. With proper care and growing conditions, it can thrive and bring beauty to your landscape.
