Cornus florida First Lady

Cornus florida ‘First Lady’, commonly known as First Lady Flowering Dogwood, is a stunning deciduous tree prized for its showy white bracts in spring and variegated foliage. The green leaves are edged in yellow, creating a striking contrast throughout the growing season before turning brilliant shades of red and pink in autumn. It also produces small red berries in late summer, attracting birds and wildlife. With a rounded, symmetrical form, it reaches about 6–9 meters tall and wide, making it an excellent feature tree for gardens and landscapes.
In Melbourne and Sydney, ‘First Lady’ thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. It prefers consistent moisture but does not tolerate waterlogging. Mulching helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Regular watering is essential during establishment and dry periods. Minimal pruning is required, apart from removing dead or crossing branches. This ornamental tree offers year-round beauty with its vibrant foliage, spring flowers, and elegant structure, making it a standout in gardens and streetscapes.
