Camellia sasanqua 'Hiryu' is a specific cultivar of Camellia sasanqua, a species of flowering evergreen shrub in the family Theaceae. Camellia sasanqua is native to Japan and is known for its beautiful and fragrant flowers.
'Hiryu' is a popular cultivar of Camellia sasanqua, appreciated for its stunning double flowers and vigorous growth habit. The name 'Hiryu' translates to "flying dragon" in Japanese, which refers to the majestic and graceful appearance of the plant when in bloom.
The flowers of 'Hiryu' are typically deep red, with overlapping petals that create a full and lush appearance. They are generally larger than the average Camellia sasanqua flower and have a pleasant fragrance. The blooms usually appear in late fall to early winter, adding a splash of color to the garden when many other plants are dormant.
Like other varieties of Camellia sasanqua, 'Hiryu' thrives in well-drained soil and prefers partial shade or filtered sunlight. It can be used as a hedge, screen, or specimen plant in gardens and landscapes. Regular pruning after flowering can help maintain its shape and encourage healthy growth.
