Recommended by Online Plants. Photinia super hedge is a common name used to describe a type of hedge that is created using the plant species Photinia x fraseri. This is a hybrid plant that was created by crossing two species of Photinia, which are evergreen shrubs native to Southeast Asia.

This vigorous quick growing Photinia produces a dense bushy habit with new growth of rich burgundy red repeatedly throughout the year. It can exceed 2 metres in height in one year, making it an ideal plant where a large, quick growing hedge or tall screen is required.  It produces white flower blooms in spring, however its main attraction is the brilliant foliage colour.  Responds well to pruning, but will still maintain a dense, screening habit if left unattended. 

Will reach 4-5mt tall and 2mt wide at maturity, however with annual pruning can easily be maintained as low as 1-2mt. When grown as a hedge, Photinia Super hedge is often pruned regularly to maintain a compact shape and encourage dense growth. It can tolerate a wide range of growing conditions, including full sun to partial shade and a variety of soil types, as long as the soil is well-drained.
