Acer x freemanii 'Jeffersred', commonly known as Jeffersred Maple or Autumn Blaze Maple, is a hybrid species of deciduous tree that is a cross between Acer rubrum (Red Maple) and Acer saccharinum (Silver Maple). It belongs to the family Sapindaceae.
Jeffersred Maple typically grows to a height of 15-25 meters and spreads up to 12-15 meters wide. It has a rounded, oval-shaped crown and produces medium-green, lobed leaves that turn a bright orange-red in the fall. The leaves may persist on the tree longer than other maples, adding to its ornamental value. In the spring, Jeffersred Maple produces clusters of small, red flowers that are followed by winged samaras or 'helicopters' in summer. These are the tree's fruits and they are dispersed by the wind.
Jeffersred Maple is a popular species for landscaping, particularly for its striking fall foliage and fast growth rate. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun, but can also tolerate partial shade. It is relatively low-maintenance and has good resistance to pests and diseases. This well structured and very adaptable tree features some of the best autumn foliage colourings of the hybrid red maples, but is most useful as a medium to large shade tree for car parks, amenity areas around buildings, medium to large properties and for street, avenue or park plantings.
