Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’, commonly known as Crazy Filbert or Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick, is a unique, deciduous shrub prized for its twisted, contorted branches and crinkled, heart-shaped green leaves. Growing to around 2–4 meters tall and wide, it provides year-round interest, especially in winter when its bare, spiraling branches create a striking architectural display. In late winter to early spring, it produces long, golden catkins that add extra charm before the foliage emerges.
In Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Brisbane, Crazy Filbert thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, fertile soil. It adapts to various soil types and prefers regular watering, especially during dry periods. Pruning is minimal but can be done to remove any straight, non-contorted growth. It’s highly decorative and works well as a feature plant, in mixed borders, or even in large pots, bringing unique texture and seasonal interest to the garden.
